Open Innovation for Marine Pollution: Wind-Powered Sailing Robot “Protei” Is Cleaning Oil Spills, Material Wastes, and Chemical Pollutants in the Ocean

In order to resolve the world’s oil spill issues caused by the Deepwater Horizon Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, Protei (a wind-powered and automated sailing fleet robot) was developed by MakerBay and Seeed. By shifting its shapes according to water waves and wind directions, the robot has been useful in collecting and cleaning thin sheens of light oil on water surfaces. Thanks to the fact that it is robustly built to survive in harsh weather conditions and hazardous chemical zones, it is now also used to clean material wastes and other chemical pollutants in the ocean. Now, Protei is the ongoing result of glocal open innovation communities. Accordingly, this Project seeks to achieve the UN’s SDGs 6, 14, 11, 15, 3, 1, 7, 9, 8, 12, 13 and 17.

FarmBeats: Microsoft and Seeed’s AIoT Solution for Precision Agriculture and Technology Democratization for Local Farmers

In 2019, by partnering with Seeed Studio, Microsoft developed an AIoT solution for local farmers – “FarmBeats” Project. The Project has been designed to deliver Internet connectivity and to make precision farming to local farmers at affordable costs. More specifically, Seeed’s Sensor Box was developed and used for the Project to monitor various environmental conditions that affect the crop growth. As a result, agricultural productivity rate has been increased, while overall maintenance costs and human labor inputs have been minimized. FarmBeats Project has been recognized to help accelerate the UN’s SDGs 2, 9, 12, 5, 6, 7, 8, 4, 13, 17, 1 and 10.

“Smart Citizen Kit” by Fab Lab Barcelona, European Commission and Seeed Going Global: Environmental Monitoring for Civic Participation in Urban and Suburban Communities

Smart Citizen Kit is a completely open-source environmental monitoring device developed for the global Smart Citizen Project by Seeed, Fab Lab Barcelona, IAAC, and European Commision. This Kit allows citizens to easily measure, collect, integrate, and visualize data on an openly-shared platform that will help the citizens to tackle local challenges in their communities. This Project seeks to influence the UN’s SDGs 1, 12, 3, 16, 17, 13, 4, 6, 10, 5 and 9.

IIoT Solution for Smart Agriculture: SenseCAP LoRaWAN’s Environmental Monitoring for Sustainable Durian Farming in Malaysia

Seeed’s SenseCAP LoRaWAN devices enabled IIoT solution in Malaysia’s durian farming sector, tracking environmental growth conditions of the sensitive tropical fruit. The Project was successful in drastically decreasing the amount of human labor and natural resources, and predicting suitable irrigation patterns and pest control periods. Therefore, this Project directly and indirectly contributes to the UN’s SDGs 9, 12, 8, 2, 13, 16, 6, 7, 11 and 17.

SenseCAP LoRaWAN Innovation for SDGs: Sweet Melons Grown at Smart Agriculture Demonstration Park in Beihai, China

Smart Agriculture Demonstration Park Project deployed Seeed’s SenseCAP LoRaWAN gateway and sensors for precision agriculture in a greenhouse of sweet melons, which is located in Beihai City of Southern China. Through the IIoT solution, improved resource efficiency and economic productivity have been observed, through which the Project seeks to achieve the UN’s SDGs 13, 3, 17, 10, 11, 9, 8, 2, 1, 4, 6, 7 and 12.

SenseCAP LoRaWAN IIoT Solutions for OPEN Global IoT Education Project for Future Jobs and Resilient Livelihoods

In the OPEN Global IoT Education Project, SenseCAP LoRaWAN IIoT solution has been deployed in order to help solve diverse local challenges for children and local communities towards a sustainable and resilient world. Through their participation, they are self-empowered to learn specific skills to prepare for newly emerging jobs in the future. In this way, the Project aims to achieve the UN’s SDGs 4, 5, 12, 11, 13, 9, 8, 17, 6, 7, 14, 15, 2 and 1.

Smart Tea Plantation in Mengding Mountain Enabled by SenseCAP LoRaWAN to Augment Resource Efficiency and Customer Trust for SDGs

SenseCAP LoRaWAN gateway and sensors were deployed in the IoTea Project to monitor crucial environmental data needed to ensure the optimal tea quality in Ya’an of Southwest China. Through this Project, the overall tea plantation management costs have been lowered, economic yields have been increased, and the tea plantation’s brand image has been upgraded to attract customers who care about food traceability and sustainability. By doing so, the IoTea Project achieves the UN’s SDGs 8, 9, 12, 10, 11, 1, 5, 6, 7, 2, 4, 13, 15, 16 and 17.

SenseCAP LoRaWAN in Triticale Farming: Precision Agriculture and Sustainable Livelihood Development in Dingzhou, Northern China

Beishao Triticale Field Project elaborates on a deployment scenario of SenseCAP LoRaWAN gateway and sensors for smart agriculture solutions in a triticale field of Dingzhou City in Northern China. This will advance resource-efficiency, environmental traceability, and sustainable technological applications on the field. As a result, this will facilitate self-empowerment of the farmers to manage their triticale fields more precisely by grasping the crop’s conditions and needs with less labor inputs, and later gain higher yields. Overall, this Project contributes to the UN’s SDGs 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 17.
