Empowering Innovation: XIAO ESP32S3 Sense and SenseCraft AI Workshops Spark Technological Advancement in Colombia

In February 2025, Seeed Studio, in collaboration with various academic institutions and FabLabs across Colombia, conducted a series of hands-on workshops focusing on the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense and the SenseCraft AI platform. Led by our ranger, Gabriel Giraldo, these events aimed to train students, educators, and professionals in developing artificial intelligence solutions and rapid prototyping using open-source hardware.

1. Innovation in Manufacturing – Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira

On February 19th, the FabLab at the Technological University of Pereira hosted the inaugural workshop. Seventeen participants, including students and faculty from the manufacturing department, explored the capabilities of the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense combined with SenseCraft AI. Attendees learned to deploy computer vision models using datasets from Roboflow and discussed techniques from Edge Impulse for developing TinyML systems.

Key Learning:
The models focused on identifying objects, such as in a use case involving manufacturing parts, achieving high accuracy in simulated tests.

Innovative Projects:

  • Prototypes to automate quality inspections in manufacturing.
  • Future integration of the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense in university labs.

“In just two hours, we built a functional prototype using SenseCraft AI. This changes our perspective on automation.” – Participating researcher

2. Aerospace Applications – Universidad de Antioquia, Rionegro

On February 20th, the team traveled to the eastern branch of the University of Antioquia in Rionegro. With 23 members from the aerospace research groups Voyager and DeltaV in attendance, the workshop centered on AI applications in the aerospace sector. In addition to practical sessions, participants toured “La Finca,” the prototyping workshop where students develop projects such as ground stations, drones, and rockets. They also shared their achievements in international competitions, highlighting their dedication and excellence in the field.

Key Learning:
The use of the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense for lightweight telemetry systems in rockets was explored. Participants planned tests to measure vibration, image capture, temperature, and real-time GPS. A standout project was the initial design of a CanSat equipped with this microcontroller, which our Ranger Gabriel has been working on and will be tested soon in experimental launches with the research team.

Innovative Projects:

  • Compact telemetry systems with XIAO are expected to be implemented for international competitions.
  • A joint proposal is underway to develop aerospace products based on AI, which our Ranger has been working on, and we will have more information soon.

“The size and weight of the XIAO allow us to incorporate AI directly into flight systems without compromising performance.” – DeltaV team member

3. Ambiental Research, Automation and Architecture – Colegio Mayor de Antioquia, Medellín

The day concluded at the Institución Universitaria Colegio Mayor de Antioquia in Medellín. At the institution’s FabLab, students, professionals, and faculty from the architecture department engaged in prototyping activities and developed IoT solutions with computer vision, applying the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense to projects relevant to their discipline. Discussions included specific use cases, demonstrating how integrating AI can transform architecture and design.

Key Learning:
Practical cases related to home automation, smart architecture, and environmental applications were analyzed. Attendees discussed functionalities such as the use of voice and vision AI models with the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense.

Innovative Projects:

  • Pilots for smart infrastructure with vision AI and voice commands.
  • Planning for future workshops at the local FabLab.

Introduction of the CO-CREATE for AI Gadgets Campaign

At the conclusion of the workshops, the CO-CREATE for AI Gadgets campaign by Seeed Studio was introduced. This monthly initiative invites creators to develop innovative solutions to everyday challenges, offering the opportunity to transform prototypes into commercial products. The top three projects each month have the chance to be featured in our online store and generate shared profits with the creators. During the presentation, success stories were showcased where projects evolved from prototypes to commercial solutions with the support of Seeed Studio, illustrating the potential for collaboration and growth offered by the CO-CREATE campaign.

These workshops and the introduction of the CO-CREATE campaign reflect Seeed Studio’s commitment to education, the promotion of open technologies, and support for the creator community. By providing access to advanced tools, we aim to foster innovation across various fields of knowledge.

General Impact

  • 97% rated the workshops as “transformative” for their studies or careers.
  • 12 proof-of-concept projects are being refined for commercial or academic applications.
  • Three universities are considering adopting XIAO and SenseCAP kits as part of their educational plans.

These workshops highlight how tools like the XIAO ESP32S3 Sense and SenseCraft AI can democratize technological innovation in Colombia, empowering students and professionals to address real challenges with AI-based solutions.
