Smart Coastal Management: IoTech Deploys SenseCAP LoRaWAN Weather Station to Enhance Environmental and Water Quality Monitoring in Bournemouth

The “Bathing Water Quality” project at Boscombe Seafront, Bournemouth, marks a significant advancement in coastal environmental monitoring, driven by IoTech’s deployment of the UK’s first 9-in-1 smart weather station. This initiative, part of BCP Council’s “Smart Place” program, leverages SenseCAP compact weather sensor and the SenseCAP S21000 LoRaWAN Data Transmission Unit to provide real-time, accurate environmental data crucial for maintaining high water quality standards. In collaboration with UnifAI Technology, Wessex Water, and Iknaia, this project not only enhances public safety but also sets a new standard for smart coastal management, serving as a model for other coastal regions across the UK. IoTech, as a solutions provider, played a pivotal role in ensuring the successful integration and deployment of SenseCAP devices

  • Solution: Installation of a 9-in-1 smart weather station to provide real-time, accurate environmental data for enhanced water quality monitoring.
  • Industry: Environmental Monitoring, Coastal Management
  • Solution Deployed in: Boscombe Seafront, Bournemouth, UK

Bournemouth, a renowned coastal town in Dorset, UK, is celebrated for its stunning beaches and vibrant tourism industry. In recent years, the town has focused on enhancing its environmental monitoring capabilities to ensure the safety and enjoyment of both residents and visitors. With an increasing emphasis on sustainable tourism and public health, BCP (Bournemouth, Christchurch, and Poole) Council launched the “Bathing Water Quality” project as part of its broader Smart Place initiative, which leverages cutting-edge technology to monitor and maintain high environmental standards.

Challenges

Bournemouth’s tourism industry relies heavily on the pristine condition of its beaches and coastal waters. However, maintaining water quality in such a popular destination poses significant challenges, particularly due to pollutants and the impact of weather conditions on water safety. Traditional methods of water quality monitoring were insufficient to provide real-time data, which is crucial for timely interventions and informing the public.

The challenge was to implement an IoT solution that could provide accurate, real-time environmental data to monitor water quality, predict risks, and ensure the health and safety of beachgoers. Additionally, the solution needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing digital LoRaWAN network infrastructure and provide accessible information to the public.

Solution

To address these challenges, IoTech, a technology company based in Poole, partnered with Seeed Studio to deploy the UK’s first 9-in-1 smart weather station at Boscombe Seafront. This weather station, consisting of a SenseCAP S900 9-in-1 Weather Sensor and a SenseCAP S21000 LoRaWAN Data Transmission Unit, is part of a comprehensive IoT solution that leverages LoRaWAN connectivity for long-distance data transmission, enabling continuous monitoring of nine critical environmental parameters: air temperature, humidity, air pressure, light, rainfall, pollution, PM2.5, PM10, wind speed, and wind direction.

The data collected by the smart weather station is fed into the SeaCheck web app, developed in collaboration with IoTech, BCP Council’s Smart Place team, Wessex Water, UnifAI Technology, and Iknaia. Thanks to the AI/ML-based system developed by UnifAI Technology, this app provides accurate real-time data on air, sea condition, and also weather forecasting. It enables more timely responses to potential environmental risks, helping beachgoers make informed decisions about their activities and ensuring public safety.

Why SenseCAP

IoTech selected the SenseCAP Devices due to their proven reliability, ease of integration, and robust performance in challenging environmental conditions. The SenseCAP S900 Weather Sensor was particularly chosen for its comprehensive sensor suite, which perfectly aligns with the project’s need for multi-parameter monitoring. The decision to use LoRaWAN connectivity was driven by its long-range capabilities and low power consumption, making it ideal for continuous, real-time data transmission over the expansive coastal area of Bournemouth.

The ability of SenseCAP devices to seamlessly integrate with existing infrastructure and their support for various network servers also made them the preferred choice. IoTech, as a trusted solutions provider, ensures seamless integration for Seeed Studio products, offering comprehensive support for deployment and customization to meet specific project needs. This flexibility allowed IoTech to quickly implement the solution and ensure it met the specific needs of the Bathing Water Quality project.

Results of the Project

The deployment of the SenseCAP Weather Station has had a significant impact on the Bathing Water Quality project. Real-time monitoring has improved the accuracy of water quality predictions, enabling faster and more effective responses to potential pollution risks. This proactive approach has not only enhanced public health and safety but also contributed to the sustainable management of Bournemouth’s beaches.

Michael Leggett, Managing Director of IoTech, comments on the project, “Our smart weather station offers precise, real-time data crucial for tackling water quality challenges. By providing accurate and timely information, this technology allows for better resource management and quicker responses to environmental changes.”

The SeaCheck web app, powered by data from the SenseCAP S900 Weather Station, has become an invaluable resource for residents and tourists, providing them with up-to-date information on sea conditions. The success of this project has set a new standard for environmental monitoring in coastal areas and is expected to serve as a model for other local authorities in the UK.

When talking about the project, Cllr Millie Earl, Leader of BCP Council mentions,  “The SeaCheck web app represents a huge advancement in our efforts to promote a healthy and prosperous seafront that residents and visitors can enjoy safely.”

Furthermore, this project has been instrumental in supporting BCP Council’s goal of creating a safer, more sustainable environment, demonstrating the value of smart technology in public service. The project partners are now considering expanding this solution to other coastal areas managed by BCP Council.
