uPhone, An AI Wearable for Better Interaction, Powered by XIAO ESP32S3

Imagine a world where technology doesn’t just augment the individual, but enhances human interaction itself. Meet uPhone, a revolutionary wearable AI that turns the concept of personal devices on its head. While most gadgets focus on providing information to their owners, uPhone is designed with a radical new purpose: to assist and inform the people around you.

Created by visionary technologist Cayden Pierce, uPhone is not just another AI wearable – it’s a paradigm shift in human-computer interaction. This groundbreaking device takes the form of a necklace, with a display that faces outward, visible to everyone engaged in conversation with the wearer. It’s a wearable computer that bridges the gap in human augmentation by making AI assistance, real-time translation, and information sharing a collective experience.

In a world where technology often creates barriers between people, uPhone breaks them down. It’s more than a personal assistant; it’s a social enhancer, designed to enrich face-to-face interactions and foster understanding. With uPhone, you’re not just wearing technology – you’re wearing a tool that empowers those around you, transforming every conversation into an opportunity for shared knowledge and enhanced communication.

uPhone consists of 2 main parts: the wearable necklace pendant and a control glove. The necklace pendant comes with a round screen, visible to everyone to people who is around interacting and talking with the owner, which aims to break down augmentation disparity. Apart from the HD RGB round touchscreen, uPhone also features a XIAO ESP32S3 as the maincontroller, lipo batter, and RGB LED Indicator as a viewable interface for the people who is speaking to the owner. As for the control glove, which has sensors in the fingers, allows the wearer to control the uPhone. The Control glove is powered by XIAO ESP32S3 and a custom expansion PCB in the back, hall effect sensors in the finger tips, magnets in the thumb, which allows for gesture detection, which controls the applications running on UPhone Necklace.

Hardwares

To build the uPhone, the following hardware components are used:

For the necklace pendant:

For the control glove:

    • XIAO ESP32S3
    • Custom Milled PCB Board
    • Sensors for Gesture Detection
      • Hall effect sensors in finger tips
      • Magnets in the thumb

How the Project Works

The uPhone is a smart wearable necklace pendant featuring an HD full-color touchscreen that remains visible to the other person during conversations. It is paired with a control glove equipped with sensors and magnets via BLE, allowing the wearer to control the uPhone through gestures. Once the glove detects specific taps, it will trigger the application on the necklace to switch from one to another (eg, translation, navigation or disply info).

Key features include:

    • Translation and AI Assistance: Provides real-time translation and AI-driven information to both the wearer and the conversation partner.
    • Navigation and Link Sharing: Facilitates easy sharing of navigation routes and links, making interactions more engaging and informative.
    • Gesture Control: The control glove detects double taps from the fingers against the thumb to operate various applications on the uPhone. This is made possible through the integration of BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) technology, connecting the uPhone and smart glasses to the wearer’s smartphone.
