Empowering Efficiency: How Raspberry Pi Transforms Indoor Energy Management
By Jenna Zhu 11 months agoSummary
“Around the globe, there is a great need to save energy, which impacts prices, emissions targets, and legislation that affects us all. Not only can energy management help reduce the carbon emissions that contribute to global warming, it also helps reduce our dependence on increasingly limited fossil fuels.” More and more individuals and companies are responding to this trend and getting involved in the construction of the energy management industry.
A solution provider from a European country integrates their in-house developed indoor energy management software with a range of hardware solutions provided by Seeed Studio, including various sensors and Raspberry Pi gateways. This integrated solution is extensively utilized in end customers’ indoor energy management projects.
Key Info
Seeed Solution: Raspberry Pi-powered Device EdgeBox-RPI-200
Industry: Indoor Energy Management
Challenge
The customer was seeking a device that is based on an open platform, allowing for easy deployment of their proprietary software solutions. Additionally, the gateway needs to possess excellent wireless connectivity capabilities and support various sensors for data collection, including but not limited to temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, lighting, and VOC (volatile organic compounds). The gateway should be able to communicate with multiple sensors using protocols such as Zigbee, wireless, Bluetooth, or Modbus, enabling data transmission and sharing.
Solution
Since the customer is focusing on open-platform solutions, Raspberry Pi should be the first choice. Leveraging the powerful open-source community and platform of Raspberry Pi, different software can seamlessly adapt and deploy.
Among the Raspberry Pi’s official approved design partners, the customer found Seeed Studio and the Raspberry Pi gateway, EdgeBox-RPI-200. The impressive wireless connectivity capabilities of EdgeBox-RPI-200, including built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and support for Zigbee, impressed the customer.
Using EdgeBox-RPI-200, the customer connected a series of sensors to monitor indoor environmental conditions. For example, when the temperature reaches a certain threshold, EdgeBox-RPI-200 can automatically turn on or off the air conditioning. Similarly, when indoor air quality reaches a certain level, it can activate ventilation or air purification devices. Additionally, it can automatically turn off indoor lights when no one is present. These solutions involve indoor automation management and energy management.
Furthermore, leveraging the 4G capability of EdgeBox-RPI-200, the customer uploads all the data to the cloud for remote management and analysis. This enables adaptive smart energy management through cloud-based monitoring and analysis of the collected data.
