Seeed has organized a skill-based competition for you. This competition aims to build project tutorials for Wio Terminal and other embedded hardware using TinyML/Edge Impulse/Azure IoT Central/IoT Plug and Play. To decide the final prize winners, all qualifying entries will be judged using the judging criteria outlined below.

Submission requirements

To be eligible, you must meet ALL of the following requirements unless stated otherwise:

General Requirements

  • Your entry must be your project.
  • By registering for this contest on the behalf of your team, you acknowledged that you are the designated representative authorized to act on the behalf of your team.

Hardware/Software Build Requirements

  • Your project must be related to TinyML.
  • Your project must include a Wio Terminal.

Project Documentation Requirements

Documentation and Context Requirements

  • Your project must include a project name, a short project description of no less than 300 words, images, a bill of materials (BOM), full instructions, and relevant resources (schematics, code, CAD).
  • Your project must be written in English.

Image Requirements:

  • There must be at least 4 original images along with the submission that must include:
    • a cover photo,
    • an unboxing photo,
    • and a photo of the product being used.
  • Your images must be clear and bright. [No blurriness and distortions that may compromise the quality of the submission]

(Optional) Video Submission:

  • Video is optional. Additional points may be rewarded for submissions with video.
  • No less than 3mins.
  • Video must be clear and bright. [No blurriness and distortions that may compromise the quality of the submission]
  • Voiceover is optional. Voiceover need not be in English, can be in any language.
  • Video is optional. Additional points may be rewarded for submissions with video.

Your project must be submitted by JUNE 30TH, 2021 at 12:00 AM PT.

Judging Criteria

The rubric below will be used to evaluate your project. If you accumulated at least 80 points, you will be given a coupon!

  • Industrial Application & Project Documentation (30 points)
    Instructions/Story – With photographs, screenshots, and/or a video demonstration of your solution working as planned, show how you built your project.
    Consider this: “Would I be able to replicate this if I were a novice reading this documentation?”
    Industrial Application – The project must show how you solved a real-world problem on a large scale.
  • BOM (10 points)
    Provide information about the hardware, software, and/or resources that were used.
  • Schematics (10 points)
    Draw your circuit diagrams using software such as Fritzing.org and/or take accurate photographs of your circuit to display it clearly.
  • Code Documentation(20 points)
    Include working code as well as informative comments. The aim of comments should be to clarify why the line is needed and how it works.
  • Creativity & Scaleability (30 points)
    Your idea does not have to be original, but it should be innovative (a fresh take on an old idea is often worth as much as a brand new idea). In addition, the project should show a clear path to implementation.

Bonus Points

  • Connect to Azure cloud using IoT Plug and Play (10 points)
  • (Low) Power consumption (5 points)
    Projects that consume less power can earn more points
  • Road Less Traveled (5 points)
    Projects that utilized sensors not used in other published projects (prior to the starting date of the contest) can earn additional 5 points.
  • Strength in Numbers (5 points)
    Projects that have additional hardware, apart from Wio Terminal and Grove modules (e.g. SBC, robotic platform, various actuators, etc) can earn additional 5 points.

How to Register?

Step 1: Submit an application

  • Start by signing up for an account with Seeed (or sign in if you already have a Seeed account).
  • Apply by clicking ‘Apply Now’. We will inform you if you applied for the free trial successfully before the date as shown on the page.

Step 2: Once you’ve received a confirmation email from us, you’re good to go. Place an order for a Wio Terminal if you don’t have one yet.

Step 3: Build and Document Your Project

Build your project according to the submission requirements above.

Step 4: Review and submit your project

  • Examine the project to ensure that it satisfies all of the submission criteria.
  • To get the most points, make sure your project meets all of the judging requirements mentioned above.
  • With all of the above specifications, share your project on Twitter/Facebook/Blog/Hackster.io.
  • After publishing, send an email to [email protected] with the project URL. We’ll give you the coupon as soon as we confirm that you’ve received more than 80 points.

Step 5: You will receive a coupon if your project points are above 80. that can be used at our online shop – with no minimum order!

Common terms used in these rules

The following are the complete regulations that control the contest’s operation. Seeed and/or the contest host are referred to as “we,” “our,” and “us” in these regulations. A qualified contest participant is referred to as “you” or “yourself.”

What are the start and end dates?

The contest will run from May 1st, 2021 at 8:00 a.m. PT to JUNE 30th, 2021 at 12:00 a.m. PT, with the following periods:

Can I enter?

If your participation violates ANY of the following, you may be disqualified.

  • Your submission must be your project.
  • To apply for your entry, you must have obtained the necessary consents, permits, or licenses.
  • Unless you have permission to use the materials, you can not include any third-party trademarks (logos, names) or copyrighted materials (music, photographs, video, recognizable people, code, schematics, etc…) in your entry.
  • Your entry must adhere to your company’s gift policy.

Hardware applications and/or project entries must NOT contain ANY of the following content:

  • Sexually explicit content is prohibited.
  • Unnecessarily violent or derogatory content directed toward any ethnic, racial, gender, religious, professional, or age group.
  • Profane or obscene content is not permitted.
  • Content that encourages the use of illicit drugs, firearms/weapons (or the possession of any of the aforementioned), or a specific political agenda.
  • Contains pornographic or offensive material.
  • Content that is defamatory, inaccurate, or includes disparaging comments about other individuals or businesses.
  • Content that sends out messages or pictures that aren’t associated with the positive images and/or products we want to identify with.
  • Any illegal content.

We reserve the right to reject any submission that we deem contains any of the above material at our sole and absolute discretion.

Inspirations for your Creativity

We know that forcing your creative juices to come up with original projects ideas within a period of time can be daunting and difficult. Here are some Wio Terminal TinyML related projects to help you get started with coming up with your own idea!

Artificial Nose with TinyML and Wio Terminal

There is really no limit when it comes to TinyML despite its low-power consumption. Benjamin Cabé, an IoT maker, used machine learning (TinyML) on the Wio Terminal and several gas sensors to create an artificial nose. This is no ordinary nose, this artificial nose is able to accurately predict the different kinds of alcohol around it! 

It is also known as a “wine tasting” AI device due to this feature. It is done by using a Grove – Multichannel Gas Sensor V2, a gas sensor from Seeed’s Grove ecosystem that is able to detect a variety of gases such as Carbon monoxide (CO), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Ethyl alcohol (C2H5CH), and many more. 

In this example, the data acquired from the gas sensor is then used to create a dataset via TinyML with the different kinds of booze available such as Vodka and El Loro. This project significantly represents the versatility of the Wio Terminal with TinyML.

TinyML Weather Station

A typical weather station would involve connecting sensors to a microcontroller platform and inferring the data collected afterwards. With TinyML, a maker from Seeed Studios is able to make a Smart Weather Station.

With an onboard TensorFlow Lite Model, the Wio Terminal is able to use the real-time temperature and relative humidity data to make half-hourly weather predictions! 

In this example, the dataset was built with Edge Impulse with the data and deployed in the Wio Terminal. The weather predictions will be useful for farmers to be prepared for the weather changes. For instance, farmers will be able to safeguard the crop in advance against adverse environmental conditions such as thunderstorms and deficient rain. Anticipated weather conditions that may aggravate plant diseases or lead to pest and insect intrusion can allow farmers to take preventive measures for damage control.

This is only one of the many TinyML applications for agriculture. There are also implementations that can analyse crop sustainability and also evaluate farms for the presence of diseases, pests or malnutritions with temperature and precipitation data. There is no limit to your creativity with TinyML!
