W600 vs ESP8266 | Small and low-power IoT development boards comparison

Hi Seeekers!

As you all know, we have released the W600 series a few months ago with the W600 module releasing at first. For those of you who missed these products, refer to the video below to learn more about these products.

So far, we have only released three products in this series: W600 Module, Grove – W600 and Wio Lite W600. We will release the Wio W600 in the near future, so make sure to stay tuned with us for all our updates!

Now, let’s talk a little about IoT develpment boards in general.

What is the most famous Wi-Fi solution available in the maker market right now?

Well…. Without any doubt, the answer to that question is going to be the ESP8266.

What is the Arm-based Wi-Fi solution which has the potential to grow in the maker market in the future?

Well…. That is now going to be the W600.

ESP8266 vs W600

As we all know, ESP8266 IoT Development platform has been around for several years and it is the most famous platform up to date for everyone to realize their IoT projects at a very low cost. Also, ESP8266 has a very strong community and this makes it possible for anyone to get started with IoT development.

So, why did we release another IoT development board even though the ESP8266 platform is unbeatable?

Well…W600 is a new player in the market and we believe that it will create more possibilities than the ESP8266 because of its Arm-based chip. Also, with mbed support coming in the future, you will be able to prototype on this lower Arm Based chip and scale it by easily porting the code into a higher Arm based chip. Since W600 module is FCC and CE certified, you can easily go into market with your W600 based projects. We also plan to gradually grow our community around W600 and help everyone realize their IoT projects at a lower cost using an Arm-based chip.

Now let’s have a comparison between the two chips

Comparison between W600 and ESP8266

When it comes to performance, W600 is on par with ESP8266, but W600 has added advantage over ESP8266 in terms of higher RAM. Both operate at low power providing you to build your low powered IoT solutions.

Just like the ESP8266 chip comes in different varities of modules for develpment, we also offer three different development modules/boards for now:

The last is the Wio W600 which we will release very soon!

We believe that these modules/ development boards will help you a lot in your IoT projects and also looking forward to grow our W600 community together!

So, that is it for this comparison. Hope we could provide you enough details to explain about the difference between W600 and ESP8266, and we believe you will start your journey in the W600 ecosystem!

Enjoy making! Stay tuned to our latest and greatest products which will be releasing in the near future!

  1. This is a low-cost Wi-Fi chip with full TCP/IP capability, and the amazing thing is that this little board has MCU integrated which gives the possibility to control I/O digital pins via simple and almost pseudo-code like a programming language.
