Shenzhen 2 U

As you may know, Seeed is located in Shenzhen China, the electronics Mecca of the world.  Working here is a joy.  We are surrounded by top notch firms and factories that manufacture everything from electronic components to fully manufactured products.  An offshoot of this is the Hua Qiang Bei District located downtown; it is the largest electronics market in the world, making it a Maker’s paradise.

With multiple, 10-story plus buildings covering several city blocks, the electronics district is not your average market.  Each building is home to hundreds of booths run by local distributors or factories.   They carry every conceivable electronics building block and then some.  The selection is unbeatable and so are the prices.  Navigating the markets can be a bit overwhelming and finding what you want is time consuming.

At Seeed, we know that although you may be salivating to come here and browse the markets, it is a bit off the beaten path.  So we are bringing the market to you.  Not only will you get the benefit of accessing the best selection around, but you will avoid the aggravated hassle of bartering for the best price because we bring the savings to you.  This is an adventure, so embrace it.  We love the products, but they don’t come with any documentation or technical support.  Read the basic description and you’ll get the gist.

We’ve added some LED products to our catalogue to get started.  We have quite a few LED bars, panels, and strips.  We’ll be setting up a wish list too.  Need a component?  Have a special request?  Please make a wish here.  We will check weekly and items that generate the most requests will get added to the catalogue.

  1. That depends on the goal of your trip. Huaqiangbei undoubtedly is a best choice if your are an electronic fans. But you can also find delicious food from all around China in Shenzhen. I like that part personally.

    Pit:

    Very nice information about Shenzen.
I like to go there but wich area you recommend me to go
(think Shenzen is very big smile smile !)
    Thanks a lot Pit

  2. That is great. As China goes, it seems a good place to be from. In the middle of things, but perhaps just a bit removed from them.

Of course when we visit China, we will *most definitely* be going there! 🙂

  3. Welcome, Chris~
    I’m from Jiangsu as well.

    Chris:

I hope we can visit China soon, maybe sometime next year.
My wife is Chinese (from Jiangsu, not very far from Shanghai)

  5. That sounds like a great memory to you. Hope you would come and visit the elec market here someday. 🙂

    Chris:

Oops.. just realized those are multi-story buildings. So, probably not so telepresence-friendly. (unless there is mobile wireless in elevators, not so likely.)
Even Canal Street in NYC in its heyday (pre WTC, when I was a very little kid.) had lots of stores you had to go down stairs to enter. It was really an electronics wonderland. Its not at all like that today, unfortunately. The electronics (apart from military/aerospace) is all in Asia now.

  7. Has anyone ever thought about telepresence robotics as making it possible for shoppers elsewhere to experience shenzhen “virtually”? A firm could establish itself as allowing people to rent a wheeled telepresence robot to go shopping. It could have storage space in its trunk for small items. Then they could negotiate with sellers directly using a small translating terminal unit. If there is anyplace on Earth where that might work, it would be there, huh?

How are the curbs, (on the streets) are they wheeled vehicle friendly? Would it be possible to negotiate them if you were a robot? Also, getting into stores, are there heavy doors?
I know that Canal Street (the area in NYC which used to be NYCs equivalent of Shenzhen’s electronics area) is extremely crowded and a robot would not fare well if knocked over. (It might even get stolen for parts.)

A telepresence shopping service would require lots of vendor cooperation to work. But you shoud think about it. Or something similar via the web. I’d be glad to help you get that started on the US side. Wouldn’t it be a fun, geeky experiment? The first service in the world of its type.
