DIY Low-cost 3D Laser Scanner

final_effect

A Chinese maker named Shikai Chen skillfully designed and built this working 3D laser scanner with a common USB VGA camera, a laser emitter, a piece of filter and a steering motor. Chen spent almost 2 months to build this prototype, but the whole project only cost ¥150 (nearly $24), much cheaper than a commercial product. Here’re some parameters,

Scan ranger: 0 ~ 180 degree, 0 ~ 6m

Scan accuracy: 5mm ~ 80mm

Scan speed: 30 samples/sec

The performance is pretty amazing! Here’s a link to a video demo of how it works.

If you want to know more details about this project, here’s a complete introduction and development file, Part 1, Part 2 (sorry, the files currently only available in Chinese). Thanks Shikai Chen, a fabulous build!
